Presentation

FLI’s Grand Est node is one of three nodes integrated into the infrastructure on June 1, 2020.

It is composed of five main in vivo imaging platforms:

Open to academic and industrial partnership research, the EST node covers the spectrum of imaging modalities (MRI, Nuclear, Optical and Ultrasound for human and animal applications). The node has strong skills in instrumentation, diagnostic and interventional imaging. With the expertise of the CIC-IT, the node also has a strong expertise in clinical trial management. The EST node research laboratories (LORIA-INRIA, CRAN, ICube and Crestic) offer a large competence in data management, image processing etc. In addition, there is recognized expertise in the radiolabelling of molecules for molecular imaging associated with the production of short-long half-life positron emitting radioisotopes for diagnostic and theranostic applications and in proton beam irradiation.

The in vivo imaging modalities available to the research community include:

  • MRI
    • 3T scanner dedicated to clinical research at Nancy and Strasbourg,
    • Several 1.5T clinical systems and one interventional MRI (Nouvel Hôpital Civil),
    • 7T preclinical MRI at Strasbourg and Nancy (acquisition in 2021)
  • Nuclear molecular imaging
    • A PET-CT system, a SPECT system and an X scanner dedicated to preclinical research on the AMISSA platform in Strasbourg,
    • 3 digital PET-CT, 4 SPECT-CT and 2 SPECT available for clinical research at the NancycloTEP center in Nancy,
    • 2 microPET (acquisition in 2021 for the second one), 1 microCT (acquisition in 2021), 1 autohistoradiography device (acquisition in 2021) dedicated to preclinical research at the NancycloTEP small animal platform in Nancy.
  • Optical imaging
    • Advanced optical imaging (wide field, quantitative, real time, fluorescence and microscopic) and intraoperative on the IRIS platform of the ICube laboratory in Strasbourg,
    • Multimodal and multispectral UV-Vis-NIR optical imaging for clinical and preclinical in vivo applications at CRAN in Nancy, equipped with the following:
    • Medical devices: video-dermoscopes (skin surface microscopy), device for trans-cutaneous pressure in oxygen (TcPO2), in vivo optical imaging based on optical coherence tomography (LC-OCT);
    • Metrological devices to support laboratory developments: ultraviolet irradiator, powermeter, portable and double monochromator-equipped spectroradiometers, optical bench (including a supercontinuum laser and two integrating spheres) for the experimental determination of ex vivo biological tissues’ optical properties, macroscope, FluorVivo imager;
    • Devices developed within CRAN in collaboration with private companies and evaluated in clinics: a spatially and spectrally-resolved optical spectroscopic device (SpectroLive) evaluated in the Metz-Thionville Regional Hospital for diagnostic support of skin carcinomas during surgery, a device for video-reconstruction of skin wounds (VRPC) evaluated in the Nancy University Regional Hospital for remote diagnosis of chronic wounds, a software for bimodal cartography of the bladder inner-lining during fluorescence assisted-cystoscopy evaluated in the Lorraine Cancer Institute.
  • Ultrasound imaging supplemented by high-intensity focused ultrasound, HIFU, equipment’s for interventional procedures on the IRIS platform of the ICube laboratory in Strasbourg.

Main expertise

The Grand Est node expertise spans very broad fields:

  • Functional MRI and real-time image reconstruction, movement tracking,
  • Vascular modeling and modeling of deformable organs for interventional procedures, Large field, quantitative, real time, fluorescence and microscopic optical imaging, 3D navigation in images for guided interventions, HiFUs, Interventional imaging and thermal therapies.
  • Development of molecules labelled with positron emitters for molecular imaging
  • Intraoperative Multimodal and multispectral optical imaging (fluorescence, absorption and scattering), Modelling of light interactions with biological tissues and experimental characterization of biological tissues optical properties (quantification and mapping).
  • Image and data processing: 2D and 3D registration, mosaicking, segmentation, reconstruction, 3D navigation, features extraction, classification.
